Position Summary:
The Dental Billing Specialist is responsible for managing billing functions related to dental services, ensuring timely and accurate claim submission, payment posting, and account reconciliation. This role supports patient access to care by resolving billing issues promptly and working closely with dental providers, front office staff, and payers to maximize reimbursements. The specialist upholds regulatory compliance and contributes to excellent patient experiences through compassionate, clear communication and attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities:
• Prepare and submit dental insurance claims electronically and via paper as required.
• Verify dental benefits and eligibility prior to services when needed.
• Accurately post insurance and patient payments, adjustments, and denials.
• Review claims for accuracy and completeness before submission to prevent rejections.
• Follow up on unpaid or underpaid claims; investigate and resolve discrepancies.
• Submit and track appeals for denied or delayed claims in a timely manner.
• Communicate with dental providers and clinic staff regarding billing questions or coding issues.
• Maintain accurate patient billing records in the practice management system.
• Provide friendly, professional billing support to patients, including explaining charges, collecting balances, and establishing payment plans.
• Monitor aging reports and maintain acceptable AR levels.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, payer requirements, and dental billing regulations.
• Assist with month-end reporting and audits as directed.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or formal billing/coding training preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in dental billing required, preferably in an FQHC or multi-provider dental practice.
• Knowledge of CDT codes, Medicaid/Medicare dental billing, commercial insurance, and electronic claim systems.
• Experience with dental software (such as Dentrix, Eaglesoft, or Open Dental) preferred.
• Strong understanding of dental terminology, insurance processes, and billing compliance.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate compassion in patient interactions.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
• Work is typically performed in a standard office or clinic setting within the dental department.
• Requires extended periods of sitting, data entry, and use of office equipment such as computers and phones.
• Occasional standing, walking, lifting, or moving items up to 20 lbs.
• May require occasional travel between sites.
